Education
Mortar for Masonry is continuing education for masons based on the Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures and Industry Best Practice. By completing this course, you will have a better understanding of ASTM Standards for mortar, tooling, tolerances, and color control. You will learn what is universally acceptable to designers, engineers, building code officials, and building owners. Every mason on a project can perform their craft with a mind toward meeting building code requirements rather than “That’s how we always do it”.
Mortar bonds the masonry units, joint reinforcement, anchors, and accessories together to perform as a single assembly-a masonry wall. It also creates a tight seal between units against the entry of air and moisture. Mortar is a critical component of a structural masonry wall and Mortar for Masonry explains what the building code requires of the mason and why.
Masonry structures built today can be designed to appear like centuries old iconic buildings or match up to the most current architectural design trend. With state of the art engineering and 21st century material science, the time-tested performance of masonry is assured using less material and labor than ever before.
Moisture management is a critical component of masonry and this training module “Flashing for Masonry” will show you the mason what the code and best practice requires of our craft.
Moisture will penetrate the exterior of a masonry wall and must be collected and safely directed back to the exterior of the building. Flashing is the membrane installed in a drainage wall that facilitates this process.
This module is just one of a three part series on masonry flashing, it will be necessary to review all three parts to have a good understanding of this subject.
Part 1
An introduction of masonry flashing focusing on terms, types and general guidelines for locations.
Part 2
Focuses on the details required for successful installation of flashing in cavity walls
Part 3
Focuses on the details required for successful installation of flashing in single wythe walls.
